ArcGIS Engine SDK for the Microsoft .NET Framework, developed by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri), is a toolkit for building custom Windows desktop applications that embed advanced GIS capabilities. It exposes the ArcObjects API to .NET and provides ready-to-use Windows Forms controls—such as MapControl, TOCControl, PageLayoutControl, ToolbarControl, SceneControl, and GlobeControl—to add 2D/3D map display, editing, geoprocessing, and analysis to line-of-business solutions. The SDK integrates with Microsoft Visual Studio, offering project templates, wizards, samples, and comprehensive documentation to accelerate development.
Applications built with the SDK can work with a wide range of spatial data sources (including file and enterprise geodatabases, shapefiles, rasters, and web services), and support projections, symbology, labeling, and high-quality cartographic rendering. Deployment requires an ArcGIS Engine Runtime or ArcGIS Desktop license, with optional extension licenses (for example, Spatial Analyst or 3D Analyst) to unlock additional capabilities. While well suited to high-performance, offline-capable GIS on Windows, Esri’s newer ArcGIS Runtime SDK for .NET and the ArcGIS Pro SDK represent the preferred paths for most modern applications.
